This page is dedicated to the game development of "Fortnite Clone"
Fortnite Clone was created by Ryan Thomas and Chris Gong
The three videos found below are videos edited by myself and created playing and developing the game Fortnite Clone. It illustrates not only the developing process but the evolution the game has taken since initial release. The game is still currently being improved by fans of the project as it is an open source game.
The following videos are screen captures we took when developing the game documenting the process.
One of the very first videos we ever recorded, showing the bug we were experiencing on picking up the pistol weapon. We had to adjust where the character would be holding the weapon, we wanted it in the left hand. Do to animation issues we would eventually remove the pistol from the game and have only a AR and a shotgun in the game now as weapons.
In this second video you can see us getting started on writing code to get walls and more.
Fortnite's building is what makes it stick out more than any other game. You have a chance to defend yourself from anyone who is shooting you. In this clip we have our first attempt of implementing the building and as you can see, we would need to adjust the size of the wall significantly and move it farther away from the character.
In this clip you can see we raised the size of the walls and you can see how they are being placed when trying to build a wall. The wall's were still significantly to small at this time and would eventually get longer and wider to make a good size.
As you can see the default Unreal Engine 4 character is no longer in the game and a new character I designed myself in Adobe Fuse is replacing it. Unfortunately this character did not last very long as we found out we would have to change a lot of animations and it would take a significant amount of time other than using the default character.
The default character is now back in the game and we worked on the shooting animation of the character in this video, moving from left to right making sure the animation is smooth.
The zoom feature to shooting the gun gets added in this clip. We practice shooting the AR weapon utilizing the new zoom animation.
Now that we have the wall down we added the other two ways to build, a stair and a platform.
We made the bullets that we are going to be shooting from AR weapon to be balls to be able to see how the aim of the gun is and what the bloom is like on the bullets being fired.
In Fortnite Clone we have three different textures, wood, stone, and steel. In this clip we have now added the wood textures in for the wood walls, stairs, and platforms. You can also see a new gun in the video. It is a yellow shotgun that I would eventually change its texture to a light purple color.
We made the bullets worth 22 damage and the walls at this time were only 44 health so two AR bullet shots could destroy the wall.
In this clip we really test to make sure all the guns are shooting correctly, their damage is working correctly alongside with the walls health is correct and they are being destroyed after being shot a certain amount of times. Each wall has its own health bar and once it has been shot enough it will destroy.
New Additions in this video are the bullets that you can now pick up for ammo, bandages which when holding and you are to click, you will receive 15 health back for every bandage you have. There is also another character in this clip to just show how 5 shots would destroy an opponent on a health bar of 100.
Finally the map is added! We created the map all by hand using Unreal Engine's tools to create hills, mountains, divots and more. We used a lot of already created assets with the buildings and small huts. Every tree, rock and car in the map was handmade using Blender. The map took approximately 3-4 hours to complete.
This video shows the view of the map from the characters point of view running around.
First video of two characters being in the same game with new map. We go through all the animations in this video showing all three ways to build, shooting, reloading, using a bandage and more.
As we were trying to work out replication issues and get the multiplayer all synced up, in this video you can see the problem that we came across when it came to replicating the same walking animation.
We fix any walking replication issue and you can see the significant change compared to the last video.
Another Replication test video, we made sure every kind of movement that a character can make is all synced up correctly.
The very first fight on Fortnite Clone!
Another fight between Chris and myself in the game!
